Review: Tyler Perry’s Temptations: Confessions of a Marriage Counsellor

I know some of you may be thinking “Oh no, not another Tyler Perry movie” but I really liked it. In fact, I loved it! I think this time – I liked the fact that it was a story being told by someone.

The movie is about a marriage counsellor, Judith (played by Jurnee Smollet) – who recounts her own life’s mistakes in marriage to one of her patients. The story takes us back to how she fell in love at a young age and married her childhood sweetheart, Bryce (played by Lance Gross). They move to the big city to start on their dreams. Judith has a Masters degree in psychology and wants to be a marriage counsellor – Bryce wants to own his own pharmacy one day.

Judith finds a job in a dating service company where she works as a profile maker for match-making and Bryce starts working at a small pharmacy. Judith is ambitious and wants things to happen fast but her husband is a little slower. One of her clients, Harley (played by Robbie Jones) gives her a sneek peak into the world of the rich, famous and successful – tempting her into this new life.

The movie is basically a lesson on the 80/20 rule and deals with the trials and tribulations of growing in a marriage.

I loved the performances by Smollet and Jones. They were more than believable – real life people and I think that’s why the movie resonated with a lot of the people in the cinema. We all know that guy successful guy who wants the girl who is already taken and we all know the ambitious girl who’d be misguided to taking an easy way out.

Other performances in the movie included Kim Kardashian who played Judith’s colleague – Ava. I loved her character, it was so her. Obsessed with fashion and looking good. A job well done for her first proper acting job. Brandy and Vanessa Williams conclude the supporting cast. I think everyone should watch this one [and Tyler Perry doesn’t make an appearance – lol]
